Question:
I'm 39. I was diagnozed Diabetes 2 last summer. I immediately began a
walking and weight-loss program and have lost 33 pounds. In the winter,
I started playing indoor soccer again and I began work with a personal
trainer as well. This summer, I have begun outdoor soccer for the
season. I am still quite overweight, but able to do sports, obviously.
The thing is that with some exceptions, I am exercising 5 times a week
including things like my soccer game, one twenty minute treadmill run,
20 minute cycling and walking as well as weights.
And yet my endurance does not seem to be improving. On the contrary, I
find myself really wheezing during soccer. What bothers me is that I
have seen only marginal improvement, and I'm wondering if I wouldn't
have sports-induced asthma.
The only time the wheezing happens is during heavy cardio (ie my soccer
games mostly). As soon as I stop, my breathing returns to normal within
2-3 minutes or so. I don't seem to have any other breathing problems
that I can ascertain.
Or is this normal and am I just expecting too much too fast? Thanks in
advance for any advice you can provide!
Answer:
You never had the wheezing when you were younger, before you started this
heavy workout schedule? Sounds like it could be exersize induced asthma or a bunch of other
things. You should talk to your doctor about it. If you're doing endurance training with a pulse watch, be sure the
workouts are long enough, f. i. 30 mins.
